Abortion Statistics for Maryland

Reported Maryland Abortions

The statistics on abortions in Maryland are shocking. These figures were collected and reported by the Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene for the calendar year 2002.

According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, there were 42 abortion providers in Maryland in 2000. Only 14 of these participated in Maryland's voluntary reporting program.

The state report includes the following statement:

The State of Maryland has a voluntary abortion reporting system, so the data contained in this report are incomplete. The number of facilities submitting data can change from year to year, making comparisons over time unreliable. The quality of the data is uncertain because no independent verification has been done.

During the seven years ending 1997, the number of reported abortions declined 47.7 percent, from 18,094 to 9,459 (see Table 1). Most of the decline is attributable to the decrease in the number of reporting facilities. During the same period, the number of reporting facilities declined from 30 to 14. The average number of abortions per reporting facility increased from 603 in 1991 to 739 in 1995; declined to 584 in 1996, but rose to 676 in 1997.
