“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. Every
step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering,
and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of
dedicated individuals. This is no time for apathy or complacency.
This is a time for vigorous and positive action.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke these words about the fight
for civil rights for all human beings, regardless of color. They
still ring true today.
Today, the battle is not so much about race as it is about size
and dependency. But really, nothing much has changed. Just as in the
past, the real question is whether those who are strong should have
the power of life and death over those who are helpless.
That’s the crux of the abortion battle. Should women have the
right to kill their unborn children? In 1973, the Supreme Court
said yes and the battle was joined. It rages on today, polarizing
the country. The issue of abortion is, without question, the defining
moral issue of our time.
Abortion does nothing to empower women. Rather, it pits women
against their own children, It encourages the view that children
are but a commodity that can be acquired by “choice.” It creates a
mindset that inconvenient lives may be destroyed.
Is it any wonder that today the lives of the elderly and those
who are medically dependent often are at risk … that children suspected
of being less than “perfect” may be destroyed before birth … that human
embryos have become fodder for medical experimentation?
Indeed, this is no time for apathy or complacency. But the years of
struggle have not dimmed the ardor of those who fight for life. We have
worked tirelessly — and we will continue to work until society
recognizes that every human life is precious — from fertilization
to natural death.
Please join us as we work to rebuild a culture that respects
all human life.
