Sen. Andy Harris Wins 1st District Congressional Nomination
Three other pro-life candidates victorious
ANNAPOLIS –Maryland Right to Life congratulates State Sen. Andrew Harris for his
upset victory over incumbent Congressman Wayne Gilchrest for the Republican nomination
for Maryland’s 1st Congressional District.
Sen. Harris received 44 percent of the vote, defeating Gilchrest by a 12-point advantage.
“Maryland Right to Life volunteers worked hard on behalf of Sen. Harris, who has
always been a champion for the rights of unborn babies and their mothers,” said
Maryland Right to Life president Angela Martin. “We are delighted that he has won
the Republican nomination and look forward to his ultimate victory in November.”
As a senator in the Maryland General Assembly since 1998, Sen. Harris sponsored
numerous pro-life bills, including the 2004 Unborn Victims of Violence Act, which
would have granted legal recognition to unborn children killed by violent assault
against their mothers. He led the fight to prohibit human cloning in Maryland, and
he is one of the Maryland legislature’s most articulate spokesmen for stem cell
research that does not destroy human embryos and that is actually producing treatments
and cures.
MDRTL also congratulates the other pro-life candidates who won their Republican
primary races: Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (District 6), who received 78 percent
of the vote; Collins Bailey (District 5), who received 44 percent; and Dr. Steve
Hudson (District 8) received 38 percent.
“A Harris victory in November will give Maryland two pro-life votes in Congress,”
Angela Martin noted. “We look forward to seeing more such victories as the people
of Maryland come to understand that unrestricted abortion is not good for women,
children, and society.”

MDRTL Endorses State Sen. Andy Harris for Congressional
Seat Representing Maryland’s 1st District
ANNAPOLIS –Maryland Right to Life is proud to endorse State Sen. Andrew Harris in
his campaign for United States Congress representing Maryland’s 1st Congressional
District.
“Sen. Harris has been a staunch advocate for the rights of unborn babies and their
mothers since his election to the Maryland Senate in 1998” said Maryland Right to
Life president Angela Martin. “He is a hero to the pro-life movement in Maryland.”
As a freshman senator in the Maryland General Assembly, Sen. Harris co-sponsored
SB194, a bill to prohibit partial-birth abortions in Maryland. Although the bill
passed in the Senate, it failed in the House of Delegates by a vote of 68–70.
Since then, Sen. Harris has consistently sponsored and supported pro-life legislation
in every legislative session. He has worked tirelessly to promote the right of parents
to know when a minor daughter seeks an abortion, the right of women to receive full
information about the abortion procedure in order to give informed consent, and
the right of health care workers to refuse to participate in procedures that destroy
a human life.
Sen. Harris was a sponsor the 2004 Unborn Victims of Violence Act, which would have
granted legal recognition to unborn children killed by violent assault against their
mothers. He also supported legislation that would have required licensing of freestanding
facilities that perform abortion.
Since 2005, Sen. Harris has fought to prohibit human cloning in Maryland, and he
is one of the Maryland legislature’s most articulate spokesmen for stem cell research
that does not destroy human embryos and that is actually producing treatments and
cures.
“Sen. Harris’ record of working to promote protection for all human life makes him
an outstanding candidate for a seat in Congress,” Martin stated. “Although we will
miss his leadership in the Maryland General Assembly, we will be happy to have him
representing Maryland’s 1st Congressional District.

WASHINGTON – The following statement has been issued by the National Right to Life
PAC, the nation's largest pro-life political action committee:
National Right to Life PAC urges all pro-life Americans to do what is necessary
to see that a pro-life president is elected in 2008. National Right to Life PAC
does not want any of the pro-abortion Democratic candidates – Hillary Clinton, Barack
Obama, or John Edwards – elected president. Nor does National Right to Life PAC
want Rudy Giuliani to become the Republican nominee for president.
National Right to Life is grateful for the strong pro-life record established by
Mike Huckabee as governor of Arkansas, and recognizes that Governor Huckabee has
taken the strongest pro-life position on all of the life issues of any of the remaining
candidates for president.
National Right to Life is also grateful for the strong pro-life voting record on
abortion of Senator John McCain, and appreciates the pro-life position he has taken
in his Senate campaigns and in this presidential campaign.
National Right to Life also appreciates the pro-life position taken in this presidential
campaign by former governor Mitt Romney. National Right to Life urges pro-lifers
in the individual states to do what is best in their particular state primary to
help see that the Republican Party nominates a pro-life candidate.
National Right to Life will always be grateful for the strong pro-life record on
all of the life issues Fred Thompson established as a U.S. senator, and for the
strong pro-life position he has taken throughout his political career. Fred Thompson
conducted his campaign with integrity and honor, and we know that America will be
well served by him in any future public role he is called upon to fill.
