HELP MAKE TAXPAYER STEM CELL GRANTS TRANSPARENT IN MARYLAND!

The Maryland State Senate is now considering an important life measure! SB 628, introduced by Sen. Stoltzfus (R–38, Lower Eastern Shore) would require the Maryland Stem Cell Fund to provide important information in its annual report.

SB 628 as amended would require that the Stem Cell Research Fund add to its annual report information on the number of patients treated in clinical research funded by the state. By default, this would allow us to see how many
funded studies  are not yet at a stage to help patients directly, which would include all of the stem cell research using embryos.

In a budget crisis as severe as the present, we need to ensure each dollar is spent wisely. This bill will show the General Assembly that to provide cures and treatments for people of Maryland today, we need to focus on ethical, adult stem cell research. Embryonic stem cell research, which destroys a human life in the process of harvesting stem cells, has not yet led to cures or treatments and is far from that potential stage of research.

Key Points:

  1. Currently, we very rarely know the status of research funded by the taxpayers.  We should have the basic means to evaluate the impact of state funding of stem cell research.
  2. This bill does not strip the authority of the Maryland Stem Cell Commission to decide which proposals are the most scientifically meritorious. However, without this bill, the General Assembly has no way to measure the success of this Commission’s work.
  3. This bill allows the Maryland Stem Cell Commission to shine: why should we oppose heightened public awareness of the tremendous scientific advancements in biotechnology and medicine thanks this Fund?
