Maryland Abortion Statistics
The following information was released by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) in September 2006. DHMH has since stopped collecting abortion statistics. The data is for calendar year 2005.
The DHMH Report contains the following disclaimer:
"The State of Maryland has a voluntary abortion reporting system, so the data contained in this report are incomplete. The number of facilities submitting data can change from year to year, making comparisons over time unreliable. The quality of the date is uncertain because no independent verification has been done."
Notes on Table 4: This table shows the number of abortions that actually took place in Maryland. It shows that 1,599 women from other localities had abortions in Maryland in 2005. The bulk of these came from Washington, DC and Virginia.
Notes on Table 5: Most reported abortions in Maryland in 2005 were performed on women in their 20s. Almost 15 percent of reported abortions were performed on teens.
Notes on Table 6: The majority of Maryland reported abortions in 2005 were performed by the 8th week of pregnancy. However, more than 100 unborn babies were aborted after the 17th week of pregnancy.
