Maryland Abortion Statistics

The following information was released by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) in September 2006. DHMH has since stopped collecting abortion statistics. The data is for calendar year 2005.

The DHMH Report contains the following disclaimer:

"The State of Maryland has a voluntary abortion reporting system, so the data contained in this report are incomplete. The number of facilities submitting data can change from year to year, making comparisons over time unreliable. The quality of the date is uncertain because no independent verification has been done."

Notes on Table 7: Because abortion reporting in Maryland is voluntary, there is no way to know, for instance, whether some of the "Other" abortions performed in Maryland were partial-birth abortion.

Notes on Table 10: This date clearly shows, despite the lack of complete information, that abortion is being used as a method of birth control in Maryland.

Less that one-fourth of all abortions are performed on a woman who has never had a prior abortion. Fully one-third have had one prior abortion, and nearly 20 percent have had three or more prior abortions!
